Art and Design
Statement of Intent
At Waddington and West Bradford, we recognise that art, craft and design embody the joy of human creativity. Education in these areas should engage, inspire and challenge all pupils whilst equipping them with the knowledge, skills and desire to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design.
At the heart of our curriculum is the use of sketchbooks as personal working documents. Sketchbooks enable pupils to record ideas, experiment with materials and techniques, reflect upon their work and demonstrate progression throughout their artistic journey. We encourage children to take creative risks, develop their own artistic voice and celebrate individuality through artistic expression.
Through a broad and progressive curriculum, pupils experience a diverse range of artists, craftspeople and designers from different cultures, time periods and backgrounds. They develop the knowledge, skills and vocabulary needed to create, evaluate and discuss artwork with increasing confidence and understanding.
As pupils progress, they learn how art and design both reflect and shape our history and culture while developing the creativity, resilience and critical thinking needed to become confident young artists.
